May 22, 1956: before some NBC programs, a colorful bird began to appear on the screen, its tail spread wide. The show, said a voice, was “brought to you in living color on NBC.” RCA, which owned NBC, wanted every family to buy a color set. In many homes, the bird still showed up in black and white. Which bird was it?
